Ma no!

Milan, very little money, and the most memorable weekend ever!
My father would jokingly say that the main reason I applied, and
eventually went to Business School, was to get an excuse for traveling,
getting to learn languages and making new friends… Now that I see my
life in perspective, I don’t think he was very wrong…
Over two years time, i studied in Chicago (Evanston) and Paris… Helped
design concept strategies for the launching of FRITOS, in Sao Paulo, in
Brazil, while working for Young and Rubicam Adversting in the summer
between first and second years of business school. During the second
summer I worked for Leo Burnett Advertising in Milan trying to convince
italians to have something else for breakfast besides coffee… ahem,
ahem, what about some Rain Bran with milk for breakfast?
One of the most dear memory of so many travels was the weekend that, while
being in Paris, an italian friend from Bologna, asked Morris, a Canadian
friend of syrian ascent, and I that if we helped him drive his car from
Paris to Milan, he would pay for
our “couchettes” on the night train back, just in time to go to school…
and ofcourse we gladly accepted.
We drove for nine hours, through the most beautiful parts of France before
going through Mont Blanc in Switzerland just to come to Italy through the
Dolomites… a spectacular and tiring trip to do in one single day…
Guido’s piccolisimo studio turned out to be a small palace in the
exclusive and model filled zone of Brera, in the heart of Milan! We later
found out that Guido’s family were bankers for centuries in Bologna and
this was his family’s pied a terre in Milan!
Starving and very tired we immediately suggested Guido to go out for
dinner…” ‘Ma no! Noi magiamo in casa!”… we literally though he was
joking! The place had been empty for weeks and there was no food in
sight….
“Andate prendere una doccia!” he ordered… go, take a shower, I will make
the best pasta ever for you!, both Morris and I were extremely happy for
we were on a very very low student budget!…
While Morris was taking a shower, i stayed with Guido helping in the
kitchen… here is what we did…
In a lot of olive oil he soft fried almost a whole garlic head… later he
opened a can of peeled sicilian tomatoes, which he squeezed with his
fingers… he let it simmer for a long time (while we were drinking his
fathers fantastico red wine!)… then almost at the end… sea salt and
most important of all… he opened the window, grabbed a big bunch of
basil and rosemary and just put them in, complete, for another good half
one hour…
He boiled spaghetti al dente, poured the sauce, grated some parmiggiano
which was in the freezer and voila! We had the most memorabe dinner ever!
Wonderful dinner, wonderful friends, in magical Milan! What a memory!
